Love is in the Air: The New Banksy NFT
Lowy was recently given another opportunity to frame a Banksy; this time the more notable and iconic original painting Love is in the Air from 2005. Our last encounter with Banksy, his reimagining of a classic Bank of England note called Di-Faced Tenner, was an intriguing challenge for Lowy.
“I always appreciate a good pun, and I think the marriage of a polite, old-world frame to an irreverent Banksy is the perfect finishing touch, an idea worthy of the great prankster himself.”
– Lowy President Larry Shar on the framing of Di-Faced Tenner
For Love is in the Air Lowy chose a gilded Louis XV style sweep frame with pierced corner cartouches. This 18th-century French-style frame, anchored with its ornate corners, places a work meant to be seen on the streets in the 21st century straight onto the walls of Versailles; thus punctuating Banksy’s notion that love is eternal and universal, adding a decorative flourish to the presentation.
Love is in the Air (2005) is now a digital asset, minted on the blockchain through ethereum cryptocurrency as an NFT (non-fungible token).
You will be able to own a part of the digital art through Particle, a new company fractionalizing ownership of traditional artworks. Particle converts physical artworks into sets of NFTs called “particles”, allowing for the democratization of ownership over the physical piece.
The first acquisition for Particle is this original Banksy, which they acquired at Sotheby’s auction for $12.9 million. The initial offering of the Banksy NFT will run from January 10th to January 14th of 2022 featuring the Lowy frame.
While the physical work of Love is in the Air is in the collection of the Particle Foundation, the nonprofit sector of Particle, collectors of the NFT will still be able to see the work in person. The Foundation vows to tour and preserve the work for everyone to see.
Quoting Loic Gouzer, co-founder of Particle,
“Particle Foundation is going to be a museum for the people, but also by them. It will be great to see art like that because pure enjoyment of art is not complete until you feel you own it.”
To view or even own this work framed by Lowy make sure to take part in Particle’s first inaugural offering from January 10th to January 14th, 2022.
