Fine Art Framing: Milena Pavlović Barili

Continuing our long-standing museum quality fine-art framing, Lowy is thrilled to collaborate with some of the top museums and galleries around the U.S for reproduction and custom framing. Recently, our team had the pleasure of working with Eik Kahng, Chief Curator of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, to reframe their painting by surrealist Serbian painter Milena Pavlović-Barili kept in the collection of the museum.

Lowy Reproduction –
17th c. Italian Receding Cassetta Frame

Milena Pavlović Barili

Milena Pavlović-Barili was a Serbian painter/poet and the most notable female artist of Serbian modernism. Her works of art have graced galleries and museums across the world, sustaining the dialogue she had with artists like André Breton and Giorgio de Chirco. The topics of her works of art include portraits and dream-like interpretations of biblical scenes.

Using access to the Lowy frame inventory on our website, Ms. Kahng inquired about multiple picture frames in the collection until we settled on the perfect frame: a reproduction 17th century Italian receding Cassetta. The high quality wood frame features an ebonized finish and a continuously carved front twist fitted with museum-quality plexiglass to block UV rays for conservation.

The Cassetta frame style was used in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries. In the 17th century, the front molding became more pronounced which created a receding profile. The use of the ebonized finish can be traced to the influence of Dutch and Flemish picture framing, which were often made from ebony or ebonized during the 16th and 17th centuries. Similar frames were made in Spain at this time as well.

We are absolutely delighted with the new frame, which seems like it was made for the painting! The curators all feel confident that the original donor, Margaret Mallory would agree with us, were she still with us. We couldn’t be more thrilled and are waiting for just the right moment to debut the painting in its new frame”
