While somewhat similar to Italian frames, Spanish frames are known for their flamboyant style. Usually dramatic with gilt or polychrome finishes and sculptural carvings, these frames were also made with stark ebonized finishes on simple cassetta designs. The 17th century was the pinnacle of Spanish frame making. Lowy has over 400 examples ranging from the 16th – 19th centuries.
